A great green juice
to start the day
A few Christmases ago, we were gifted an Oscar Neo juicer. It’s not something we use every day, but when I remember to have enough produce to be able to juice every morning, I feel better for it. Even though it’s a slow juicer, it doesn’t take long to make enough juice for two people, and I enjoy the process of it.
I have since found out they have stopped making these juicers, but there’s a similar one called Omega. I have also seen a few people using the Breville one too, but it’s a bit bigger, and I don’t have a lot of bench or cupboard space for storage.
I often see Oscar Neo’s for sale on Marketplace for around $100, and even if they look old, they will work just fine, so keep a look out.
If you are wanting to have a juice each morning, make sure you have enough of the ingredients to last you a week, and then the routine becomes easier.
Here is my go-to recipe for a green juice. I always add an apple for sweetness, a cucumber because it’s so juicy and a lemon to balance the bitterness of green vegetables. If you are cooking, save all the stems from greens/herbs or half-eaten apples from toddlers and juice them the next day.
Makes 2 juices
Green apple, 1
Cucumber, 1 Lebanese
Ginger, 3cm chunk
Lemon or lime, 1 whole
Celery, 2 stalks
Fennel, 1/4 bulb
Chard, kale, silver beet or spinach, 5 leaves
Parsley, coriander or basil, small bunch
Chop everything small enough to fit in the juicer. I don’t bother peeling the ginger but cut the skin from the lemon or lime.
Feed everything slowly through the juicer.
Pour the juice through a sieve with a bowl sitting underneath.
Serve and drink right away.
