Harry Were, Auckland

My twin sister Harry lives in Auckland with her partner and two little ones. Growing up there, it always feels like home to me. She makes the most beautiful clothes, is a talented photographer, and she takes all the photos for our cookbooks. I miss her every day.

Where is your kitchen, and what does it look out onto? Our kitchen faces east waiting for the sun to come up. It overlooks our garden, the washing line and a reserve out the back. We can also see Te Tātua-a-Riukiuta volcano or Big King from the kitchen window which means we have dark volcanic soil and is great for growing fruits and vegetables.

Since moving here we have planted an avocado, 3 types of apple, pear, nashi, feijoa, lemon, tangelo, lime, 2 types of plum, nectarine, passionfruit, papaya, apricot, cherimoya, banana and a mulberry tree. We also have a vegetable garden and grow all our herbs.

What’s the first thing you do when you walk into it? Put the kettle on.

What’s usually left out on the bench or within reach? Olive oil, salt, utensils, dishes.

Is there a place you go back to for the same meal? Yes, Venkys in Sandringham. It’s South Indian food and we love their idli’s, dosa’s and thali.

How do you take your coffee or tea? I stopped drinking coffee a long time ago now, but I love to drink rooibos with milk and honey, or decaf coffee from a cafe.

Is there something you make on repeat without thinking? Your kale pasta.

What’s something you’ve eaten recently that stayed with you? We spent the weekend at a friend’s house on Waiheke Island. They made fish sandwiches with snapper they caught down the road from their house.

Where do you eat your meals most of the time? In the kitchen, on a round table that’s been to 5 places I’ve lived. The table top was made for me by a friend, its Blackwood on an old Eames base. I love round tables and how they bring everyone closer together.

What do you like listening to in your kitchen? My daughters.

What was the last thing you made even if it was simple? I don’t cook a lot but recently, I have started cooking more. I use all your recipes! I made your muffins but changed them to wheat free, dairy free, egg free and made them banana chocolate chip flavour. I’m trying to heal my daughter’s eczema, but they turned out great.

What’s something slightly imperfect in your kitchen that you still use? Warped wooden spoons.

I love my hand blown light mill I got from here, my Isobel Thom salt pig and my Bronwynne Cornish ceramic cat a friend gifted me.

A meal or food moment that stays with you: Every single meal given to me by friends and you when I just had both my babies.

The meal she makes without thinking is Kale pasta from my second cookbook. It’s simple, easy to prepare and kids love it too. Here’s how I make it..
